Eating Street Food in Kajjansi Market during Evenings – Must try!

Whenever I visit Uganda, I always live near Kajjansi. I first went there in 2018 to volunteer, and since then, I’ve kept coming back to that area. I like it because it’s located between Entebbe and Kampala, and it’s just a walk to Lake Victoria.

A lot of evenings while I was in Uganda, I would take a Boda Boda and ride to Kajjansi to get dinner. There are about 30-40 street food stalls during evening at the same spot, and I just can’t resist going there! The air is filled with delicious smells—grilled meats, tasty spices, and fresh fruits blend together, creating a tempting aroma that draws in hungry people. Laughter and conversations fill the market as locals and visitors gather to enjoy the tasty food.

Kajjansi is famous for its beautiful green landscapes and friendly vibe, but it really shines in the evenings when the street food stalls come to life. Every time I walk through Kajjansi’s street food market, I get to enjoy a wonderful mix of flavors, smells, and local culture that every food lover should try.

You can’t miss the food stalls because they are right on the main road that go between Entebbe and Kampala. To be more specific, these street food stalls are close to Kajjansi Market. Like I said before, more stalls start to open up in the evening, so I suggest you check them out after 6 PM since there aren’t as many open during the daytime.

Other things to do in Kajjansi

Kajjansi Market

Kajjansi market is next to the street food stalls, but it’s kind of “hidden” inside a compound surrounded by buildings. There are more than 60 market stalls where you can find all sorts of things, from fresh veggies to live chickens. Kajjansi market are usually open from morning to evening, so coming there at 6PM, the market will still be open for business.

Shopping

Kajjansi has a big street lined with shops where you can find clothes, bags, shoes, and all sorts of things for your home. Every Thursday, there’s Kajjansi Market Day, where people from nearby places come to set up stalls and sell their clothes.

Quality Super Market

It only takes about 3 minutes on a Boda from Kajjansi to reach the Quality Super Market in Kitende. This grocery store is really big and has a wide variety of products from all over the world. If you’re looking for wine, this is a great spot because they have a nice selection (spirits too), but be prepared to spend a bit more since it’s on the pricier side.

Pork Joints

Not everyone likes to eat pork and that’s totally okay. But if you do enjoy it, there are some places in Kajjansi where you can find pork joints. The tricky part is that these spots are kind of hard to find, so you might want to ask someone nearby if they can point you to one. I can tell you that there are a few tucked away somehow close to the market.

How to get there ?

There are several options to travel from Kampala. I personally love taking a boda, but not everyone enjoys it because of the wild traffic. Another choice is to head to the Kampala-Entebbe road and catch a mini-van taxi, since there are plenty of taxis that run between Kampala and Kajjansi. Just keep in mind that driving to Kajjansi from Kampala can take a long time because the traffic is really heavy during these hours, mentioned earlier.
