Recipe for Chapati & Beans, also known as Kikomando
Kikomando is a well-liked street food in Uganda that usually includes chapati, which is a kind of flatbread, along with a tasty bean sauce. The name “kikomando” was made popular by Ugandan singer Bobi Wine, who mentioned it in one of his songs. Many Ugandans claims that eating kikomando can give you strength like Arnold Schwarzenegger in his movie, Commando.
This dish is a favorite for a quick and cheap meal, especially for students and workers. The chapati is often sliced into pieces and served with the bean sauce, and sometimes people add extras like avocado or vegetables. Kikomando is known for its delicious flavor and is a common food choice in many cities in Uganda. Street vendors often sell it, and it’s enjoyed by everyone, no matter their background.
Ingredients
- 4 Chapatis
- 1 Can of Red Kidney Beans (or cook beans yourself)
- Cooking Oil
- 1 Large Red Onion
- 2 Large Tomato
- Salt & Pepper
Steps
First, pour some cooking oil into a frying pan and heat it up. Next, chop the onion and tomato into tiny pieces and toss them into the hot pan. Cook them until the tomatoes get soft and shrink a bit. After that, add the can of kidney beans to the pan and let everything cook for about 5 minutes. Don’t forget to sprinkle in some salt and pepper for flavor!
Cut the chapatis in smaller squares, and mix it with the bean sauce. You now have Kikomando. Enjoy!
